#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this year’s #GivingTuesday will take place on November 27th and will kick off the giving season by inspiring people to collaborate and give back.

Parents are their child’s first teacher.  Head Start embraces that fact and aims to empower families to advocate for their child’s needs while also celebrating their strengths. From early math and reading skills to confidence and resilience, Head Start gives children from at-risk backgrounds the skills they need to be successful in school in life.  This could not be accomplished without supportive and engaged parents!

This year, Virginia Head Start Association (VAHSA) is launching a new Parent Ambassador Program. Your donation is greatly appreciated to help support this program.  Four Head Start parents will be selected by a committee from a scholarship application and referral process. VAHSA aims to cover the cost of the following for the parent ambassadors:

  • Travel to DC train, car, and/or subway
  • Travel within DC by walking, taxi, and/or subway
  • Meetings and conference registration fees for NHSA for training and advocacy updates
  • Meetings with Virginia Representatives and Senators = Hill Visits!
  • Night tour of DC sites (bus/trolley and walking)

After the trip to Washington DC, the role of the Head Start Parent Ambassador will continue with advocacy at their local, state and national level.  Advocacy efforts will be through the guidance of the VAHSA Executive Director by participation in events, social media and training.  They will also collaborate with other parent leaders in the EHS/HS community and policy Council to empower others to share their Head Start success story!

Please consider supporting the Parent Ambassador Program on Giving Tuesday.  This type of experience creates a ripple effect of empowerment both generations, the parent and the student.  In addition, the parent ambassadors will help VAHSA share the in-person success stories with legislators to help ensure future federal funding.  Win-win!  Thank you for your support.
