From Head Start Child to Teacher to Director

I have only been the director of Rooftop CAP Head Start Program for a few years but I am already seeing some wonderful changes for some of our parents.

Last year our family service workers begin a program through Mt. Rogers Continued Education to help parents get their GEDs. We had five parents in 2006 get their GEDs! I think this is a wonderful success story. This year we have 30 parents signed up to begin working on their GEDs. I am so excited about this accomplishment. To me, if we can help our parents, we are helping our children at the same time.

I know because in 1965, the first year that project Head Start had a program, I was a child in that program. I actually still have my certificate signed by Lady Bird Johnson. Years later, I got the opportunity to go back to school (at that time my son was in Head Start). I became a Head Start Teacher and now I am the director! I can still hardly believe it. I truly love my job and I want to help as many children and parents as I can. It is my turn to give back and I am loving it!
